Grid-tied solar electric (PV) systems are a great way to save money by using free power from the sun. However, for safety reasons, they are designed to shut down when they lose grid connection during a power outage. Solar storage bypasses this issue by storing excess solar power for later use and acting as a backup if the connection is lost.

ReVision Energy’s battery backup solutions, the FranklinWH aPower2 and the Tesla Powerwall, both enable you to access the free, abundant power of the sun, even during a grid failure. We have options available in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and parts of Vermont.

Hundreds of Happy Battery Customers

Kristen and Josh of Rochester, NH had a Powerwall installed and wrote us to say:

“Going solar had been a dream for us since we bought our house 10 years ago, but we really wanted to store our energy, too. With the Tesla battery, and our panels, we were able to make that dream a reality! We love that we are able to teach our daughter about alternative energy while providing a cleaner, greener future for her!”

Matt and Kate, who paired a battery with their solar array at their 1870 farmhouse in Freeport, ME, are also thrilled by their solar powered backup:

“We live in a relatively rural area where there are power outages. A lot of people get generators for backup, but we’ve never wanted to do that. Unlike a generator, the Powerwall is completely silent and powers on in a fraction of a second during a grid outage. For us, we’re excited about capturing energy and creating electricity in general but then there is something nice about feeling like you’re actually using the solar energy you are producing rather than throwing it out to the grid.”

Battery or generator – which is better when the power goes out?

In New England, where ReVision Energy operates, we are no strangers to outages caused by harsh winter winds and unpredictable storms.

Though generators may be cheaper initially, they are limited by their fuel dependence, maintenance, and service costs. Battery storage generates no emissions, requires no recurring maintenance, and can be continuously charged by the sun.

Solar + storage is a future-proof investment.

Solar, which is already a solid economic pursuit, is an investment strengthened by the addition of solar storage. Whether you include batteries in the initial installation or invest in them later in your solar journey, they bring security to your everyday life and to your future finances.

How does battery backup power my home?

Your battery backup system will either back up the essential appliances or back up most of the house except for the heavy loads.

You can work with your solar designer to decide what loads should be considered “protected loads” (usually refrigeration, water, some outlets) or create a list of which loads can be on the “non-protected list” (things like hot tubs, pool pumps, electric heating loads) since they would require a large number of batteries.

Which battery will I get?

We offer the Tesla Powerwall and FranklinWH aPower2 for our battery backup solutions. Our Solar Designers will work with you to figure out which option makes the most sense for your home.

Our Process to Install Batteries for Your Home

You schedule a call with our team.

Book a call above, and a member of our team will get in touch ASAP.

An experienced specialist will come to your home.

If batteries look like a good fit, one of our specialists will come to your home to check out your house and discuss your energy goals.

We design your custom system.

Your specialist will design a personalized plan, present financing options, and provide a realistic overview all within a comprehensive project quote.

We handle the paperwork and prep for install.

Once we move forward with the project, we’ll take care of permits, grid interconnection, and schedule a second site visit to ensure everything’s ready for a smooth installation.

We install your system.

On installation day our crew will install your system, keeping you informed along the way and leaving no trace in your home.

Your system turns on.

Once connected, your system will send power directly to your battery backup. We’re here to support you with any questions or service needs!

Frequently Asked Questions

How does battery backup work?

Most solar arrays are connected directly to the electricity grid, and any excess electricity produced by your solar panels that is not immediately needed by your home will export to the grid. You will receive credits for this excess power, and on days when your home needs more electricity than your solar panels are making, you’ll use those credits to draw power from the grid.

Adding a battery storage solution to your solar array reduces your dependence on the electric grid and allows you to continue using solar energy even when the grid is down. Batteries work like laptop or cellphone batteries, storing power produced by your solar array for later use. This means that you have a fully charged battery ready to go, powering your house almost instantaneously when and if the grid goes down.

What are the next steps after my initial call?

If we've determined batteries are the right fit for your home, one of our Design Specialists will come out to your home and conduct a more comprehensive assessment for any details missed by satellite imagery.

Why has electricity become so expensive?

The reasons are evolving and vary from one utility provider to another. However, a consistent fact is that around 50% of electricity in New England — a percentage significantly greater than the national average — comes from natural gas. Natural gas is a globally destabilized, finite resource that is neither produced by nor easily transported to our region. This means constant rate hikes from the utilities that depend on this resource, which means higher electric bills for New England residents. Meanwhile, solar power is abundant, local, and stable!

How much does it cost?

The cost of your installation will depend on how much energy you need, how much sunlight your home gets, and any local incentives available. If you pay a monthly electric bill, we offer financing options that are designed to be less than your current bill.

How can I pay for my system?

You have several ways to pay for your solar system. You can pay upfront with cash, which offers the best return, or choose a solar loan with flexible terms. We work with lenders to provide loans where your monthly payments are less than your current electric bill. You can also use a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) for lower interest rates or explore other financing options like personal loans.

Do I have to sign a contract?

The answer is that it's up to you. After finalizing your system details, our Customer Experience team will present you with a contract, help you navigate the details, and answer any questions. Once signed you will be added to our installation queue and a date will be set for your project.
